Day 34 - Columbus, Ohio
We arrived in Columbus, Ohio in grand fashion. We caught a ride right away. Subscribers, Claudia, Mary, Kathy, and Vida, picked us up in a van that had a sign on it, "Welcome Kieto & Ziggy". What a surprise!
They all wanted to see Ziggy's Ohio hat and she obliged.
They were taking us to the Ohio Historical Center. Along the way, I said, "The nickname for Ohio is the Buckeye State and Ohio was the 17th state in the USA and it became a state on March 1, 1803."
The museum was really something. The first place in the museum we went to was the gallery.
Within the gallery is the popular section, Ohio And The Civil War, which describes Ohios key role in the conflict. Artifacts include weapons, uniforms, medical and camp equipment and battle flags from the Societys collections. More than 310,000 Ohioans served in the American Civil War. Other highlights of this history gallery are 1920s newsreels, an operating carriage shop, vintage automobiles and childrens activities, including a log cabin and pioneer kitchen, where young people can try on pioneer clothes, operate a spinning wheel and cook pioneer food.
Mary, Claudia, Kathy and Vida asked us if we ever had some of Ohio's Maple Syrup and of course we didn't so the took us to have some Ohio Pecan Pie. Yum! You should have seen Ziggy's eyes light up.
Along the way, Mary said, "Ohio Maple Syrup produces the highest quality Ohio maple syrups and sugars. It started traditionally with small groups of native woodland tribes collecting sap in wooden troughs to sweeten and preserve their meat. It has has ended up a luxurious treat enjoyed around the world."
Claudia added, "My daughter just finished her business college intership at the Packard car museum in Warren, Ohio."
Vida said, "In these fast-paced and often trying times, it's nice to settle back with the same warm, sweet taste of the Ohio Maple syrup our forefathers found irresistible and is now sampled and loved in almost every country."
What a pie. Make sure you use a big enough pan. The one listed here may not be big enough according to one of our subscriber/members who actually tried this. She said it made a big mess but was enoyable. Here's the recipe.
Ohio Maple Syrup Pecan Pie
2 Tbs. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/4 cups maple syrup
1 cup pecans
2 Tbs. flour
1/4 tsp. vinegar
1/4 tsp. salt
Unbaked 8" pie shell
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream the butter and sugar. add unbeaten eggs and stir. Add nut meats. Place in oven and bake about 1 hour or until when lightly shaken it remains solid.
Let it cool just a bit before eating. Like 20 minutes or so. It's actually good warm or chilled. Whipped cream or with some ice cream, it's delightful! Nice word.

We said our goodbyes and thanked everyone for meeting us. Tomorrow, we're in Nashville, Tennessee and Ziggy wants to do some recording. How we getting there? We're hoppin a train! We should get there by morning.
